A case involving an assault on medical staff at a municipal hospital in Thane district, Maharashtra, reached the Supreme Court after bail orders were challenged.
According to the case details, a group led by Shiv Sena councillor Ramesh Madre allegedly attacked hospital employees, including a woman doctor, in July. The assault was reportedly triggered by allegations that treatment for a pregnant woman was delayed.
Madre was initially granted bail by a trial court. The Bombay High Court later took up the matter on its own, stayed the bail and directed him to surrender. However, on August 7, the High Court granted conditional bail to Madre and three others.
Madre then approached the Supreme Court objecting to the conditions imposed by the High Court. Hearing the plea, a bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Augustine George Masih and Sandeep Mehta remarked that those who do not respect medical professionals are not entitled to any relief, including bail, and questioned the idea of entering a hospital and attacking staff.
During the hearing, the Maharashtra government’s counsel said the state would soon file an appeal in the Supreme Court against the grant of bail to the accused. The bench accepted the submission and adjourned the matter to September 7.
