Chennai: Chief Minister Vijay on Thursday announced that Tamil Nadu will create 29,108 additional police posts. Presenting the police department’s demand for grants in the Assembly, he said the new posts would be created over the next five years.
He also said 10,000 police personnel will be recruited during the current year, including 5,000 women police personnel. The government will allocate Rs 212 crore to modernise the police force and will increase petty expenditure provisions for police stations.
As part of forensic upgrades, DNA testing centres will be set up at the forensic science laboratories in Salem and Villupuram at a cost of Rs 14 crore. The state will also introduce incentives for villages that successfully eliminate drug use, offering Rs 10 lakh each to 50 villages.
For police welfare, the government will provide Rs 1 crore as assistance to the families of personnel who die while performing duties with bravery. The ex-gratia amount for families of personnel who die during service will be increased to Rs 30 lakh.
The Chief Minister further announced that new vehicles will be provided to the police at a cost of Rs 200 crore, and that initiatives such as artificial intelligence, digital forensics, real-time monitoring and modern control centres will be developed. He also announced Rs 23 crore for modern sports facilities at the Tamil Nadu Police Academy, and new fire and rescue stations at six locations costing Rs 16 crore, along with 131 new residential units at 10 locations costing Rs 80 crore.
