Washington: The Donald Trump administration has proposed a new plan that would require parents to submit proof of their citizenship when applying for passports for children born in the United States.
At present, parents seeking a US passport for a child born in the country generally need to prove their relationship to the child and provide a photo identity document. The proposed change would add a requirement to produce evidence of US citizenship.
The move comes amid a series of tighter immigration policies and visa rules introduced since Trump began his second term after taking office again in January last year.
Critics say the proposal is an attempt to curb birthright citizenship and could undermine a basic right linked to the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution, which is widely associated with citizenship for those born in the country.
