Nepal rejects reports of compensation demands
Nepal has clarified that it has not sought any direct climate finance compensation from any country, Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal said in Kathmandu.
The statement comes after media reports claimed Nepal, which suffered heavy damage in recent floods, had asked countries including India, China and the United States for climate-related disaster compensation. The minister categorically denied those claims.
Khanal said neither he nor the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has made any request for compensation to any nation. He added that Nepal has not directly approached India, China, the US or any other country seeking such payments.
Instead, he urged the international community to view the disaster through the lens of climate change impacts and to extend collective cooperation. He said recurring disasters should prompt reflection on rising temperatures and the broader effects of climate change.
The minister also said Nepal is ready to work with others to protect its civilisation, culture and future in the face of climate-related challenges.
