New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on India’s automotive industry to become a key pillar of the country’s growth by developing new technologies and improving product quality.
Addressing the 66th annual convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Modi said rising economic activity is increasing people’s mobility needs. He noted that the rapid expansion of highways and other infrastructure is easing passenger and freight movement while opening fresh opportunities for the vehicle sector.
The Prime Minister stressed that the industry must play a major role in building a cleaner and more sustainable transport system. With charging infrastructure expanding quickly across the country, he said electric vehicle adoption is rising and creating new space for innovation, which should support the shift toward next-generation mobility.
Modi also pointed to policy steps aimed at boosting industry, including the removal of unnecessary laws and controls to simplify business processes. He said initiatives such as the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and “Make in India” have strengthened manufacturing capacity, while recent free trade agreements have widened access to international markets.
Separately, Tarun Kapoor, an adviser to the Prime Minister, said the automotive sector should promote electric vehicle manufacturing and adoption at scale. He added that tighter restrictions could be introduced for petrol and diesel four-wheelers, underscoring the need to focus on the transition to EVs.
