The Tamil Nadu State Information Commission has issued directions to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department to disclose key information related to temples across the state within three months. The order asks that details be made available both on websites and on temple notice boards for public viewing.
The directive followed an RTI application filed by Ravishankar of Mandaiveli, Chennai, seeking information on certain properties, including lands, belonging to the Marundeeswarar Temple in Thiruvanmiyur. Information Commissioner Ilamparithi, while hearing the matter, cited the need for proactive disclosure in line with a Supreme Court ruling.
As per the order, temples must publicly display details of agricultural lands, vacant plots, commercial buildings and residences owned by them, along with lessee information and pending rent arrears. It also calls for disclosure of bank deposits, savings account numbers and donations received from contributors.
Further, the commission has asked for publication of staff details, including priests and permanent and temporary employees, as well as service charges. It also mandates that income-expenditure statements, audit reports, trustee board resolutions, and all HR&CE government orders, circulars and senior officials’ directions be made accessible.
In addition, 11 categories of information—such as temple opening timings, pooja schedules, festivals and the temple’s history—must be displayed prominently through banners or notice boards at temples and offices. The HR&CE Commissioner’s office Public Information Officer and Joint Commissioner Thangam has been directed to appear before the commission on November 30 with documents showing compliance.
