New solar power and onshore wind projects in India may soon have to include battery energy storage as a mandatory component, according to a plan being prepared by the Central government.
As per the proposal, projects that begin operations from July 2027 will be required to store the electricity they generate and make it available for use when demand arises.
Draft regulations prepared by the Central Electricity Authority specify that new solar and ground-based wind projects must have battery storage capable of storing energy equivalent to at least 10% of the project’s generation capacity for two hours.
The requirement is set to become more stringent from July 2029, when the same minimum 10% capacity must be supported with storage for four hours.
