Chennai: Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran has criticised the state’s ministers for behaving like “fan club leaders”, saying such conduct is not good for society.
In a statement, he referred to recent accidents at firework units in Virudhunagar district—at Srivilliputhur and Sivakasi—in which two people died and several others were injured.
Nagendran alleged that Minister Keerthana was trying to gain political advantage in the Assembly by circulating an old photograph from 2005 showing Chief Minister Vijay seated with firework workers, projecting him as a supporter of their welfare.
He said the accidents themselves were evidence that the minister had failed to effectively oversee her department. He added that merely claiming licences were issued without taking bribes was not enough, and called for proper inspections to ensure safety procedures are followed in firework factories.
With production expected to rise ahead of Deepavali, he urged Chief Minister Vijay and Minister Keerthana to take appropriate steps to prevent such tragic incidents from recurring.
