Election Commission order
The Election Commission of India has issued an order barring former Congress MLA Hasan Maulana from contesting elections for the next three years.
Reason cited
According to the report, the action was taken as he did not submit his election expense accounts in the prescribed manner during the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly election.
Background
Hasan Maulana won the 2021 Assembly election from the Chennai Velachery constituency as a Congress candidate. He is the son of former MP J.M. Haroon Rasheed, and is described as an MBA graduate, businessman and landowner. He has also served as the former state president of the Tamil Nadu Youth Congress.
Maulana’s response
Reacting to the order, Hasan Maulana alleged political vendetta and said he would approach the court. He added that he has full faith in India’s judiciary.
