The Madras High Court has granted the Tamil Nadu government three months to study and identify elephant corridors in the state and file a detailed report.
The direction came while hearing a public interest litigation seeking identification and official notification of elephant corridors. In earlier hearings, the court had ordered the formation of a committee headed by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests to carry out the exercise.
During the latest hearing, the government informed the court that a government order dated August 27 had already notified three stretches as elephant corridors: Jawalagiri–Thakkatti, Jawalagiri–Anchetti, and Billikkal–Jawalagiri.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Venu Prasad told the court that the committee had identified 41 areas as potential corridors, but sought time to examine whether these could be formally notified and to submit a comprehensive report.
Accepting the request, the judges directed the state to complete the assessment and submit the report within three months. The case was adjourned to December 4.
