New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is at the top of the list of leaders US President Donald Trump wants to meet during the G20 summit scheduled in Florida on December 14 and 15, according to US envoy to India Sergio Gor.
Gor said around 35 world leaders are expected to attend the summit, and that Trump considers Modi a friend. He added that the interaction is expected to go beyond a routine delegation meeting and cover a wider range of issues.
He noted that Trump frequently recalls his 2020 official visit to India as a memorable event, and often speaks warmly about Modi. Gor attributed this to the leaders’ personal rapport and the broader growth in bilateral ties.
On the economic front, Gor said an India–US trade agreement has reached its final stage, with talks being intensified. He said bilateral trade currently stands at about Rs 23 lakh crore, and that Modi and Trump have set a target of raising it to Rs 47 lakh crore in the coming years.
Gor also said the two countries want to work closely, describing defence ties as trust-based and not merely transactional. He added that US government representatives visit India frequently, and that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to visit India again in October—an unusually quick second trip.
