The Tamil Nadu government is planning to hold the launch event for the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme expansion in Virudhunagar on September 17, according to officials.
Education department sources said preparations are being made for Chief Minister Vijay to participate in the programme. However, they added that the Chief Minister’s schedule has not yet been finalised, and the district administration has been informed to stay prepared.
The breakfast initiative was originally introduced for Classes 1 to 5 during the previous DMK government, when it was launched in Madurai by then Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. Under the current administration, the scheme has been renamed after K. Kamaraj.
The Chief Minister has announced that the programme will be extended to Classes 6 to 8. Officials said the expansion is expected to benefit 15,14,274 students studying in 15,454 government and aided schools.
The government is considering launching the expansion at the KVS school in Virudhunagar, where Kamaraj studied. Separately, sources noted that the Meenakshi Amman Temple kumbabishekam is scheduled the same day, and the Chief Minister may attend if he visits the region, though no event has been confirmed.
