Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano erupted on Saturday (Sept. 6), sending massive ash clouds into the sky and severely disrupting air travel, according to reports.
Authorities temporarily closed six airports, including those serving Jakarta, as ash spread across key flight corridors. Operations at Soekarno–Hatta International Airport were also halted for a period, with around 170 services stopped immediately.
With cancellations mounting, passengers faced confusion at terminals. In total, 301 flights were cancelled, including 58 international services.
Indonesia’s aviation authorities said ash was observed up to about 15,000 metres over parts of Sumatra and around 6,000 metres over Java, leading to the suspension of more than 200 additional flight services.
