A special video chronicling the life of T.V. Ramasubba Iyer (TVR), founder of Dinamalar, was screened during the Coral Festival held in Chennai. The presentation portrayed his journey as one marked by innovation and sustained struggle.
The video posed a series of questions to frame his story—whether an ordinary journalist could influence an entire region, whether one could run a publication despite hostility from a princely administration, and whether new ideas in journalism could be pursued even amid financial loss—before asserting that TVR’s life offered an answer.
According to the account, TVR was born on October 2, 1908, near Thazhuvi Mahadevar Temple in the Nagercoil region of present-day Kanyakumari district. Influenced early by Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals, he took up social causes and participated in efforts aimed at the advancement of oppressed communities.
The video highlighted his role in promoting the 1946 compulsory and free primary education scheme introduced in the Travancore princely state. Working with then education director A.N. Thambi, he travelled to various places to explain the importance of education; within three months, steps were initiated to construct buildings for 50 schools, it said.
It also noted that TVR contested the Nagercoil municipal election in 1947 and later sought a seat in the Travancore legislature, but did not win. Concluding that public work needed either office or the strength of a newspaper, he decided to start a publication despite friends warning him about likely losses and citing earlier failed local weeklies.
