New Delhi: The United Nations has announced November 27 as the International Day for the Elimination of Child Marriage, following advocacy led by Indian child rights and anti-child marriage campaigner Bhuvan Ribhu.
Governments at the Centre and in states have been taking various steps to prevent child marriage and build public awareness. In this context, Ribhu argued that a dedicated international day was needed to further strengthen global action against the practice.
In India, a campaign titled “Child Marriage-Free India” is observed every year on November 27. Ribhu had urged that the same date be recognised globally as an international day.
A resolution related to the proposal was introduced at the UN by the West African nation Sierra Leone and was accepted by all countries. Ribhu welcomed the UN’s decision, calling it an important moment for India’s child protection movement.
