Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal are preparing for Navratri celebrations, popularly observed in the state as Durga Puja. Across northern India, the nine days are marked by focused worship of Goddess Durga.
In West Bengal, the festival is known for elaborate temporary pandals set up in neighbourhoods and streets. These structures are often designed with high artistic detail, drawing inspiration from world wonders or contemporary social themes.
A central attraction is the large clay idol of Goddess Durga depicted slaying the demon Mahishasura, a visual that anchors many community celebrations.
The report also notes political activity around the festival. Suvendu Adhikari, described as close to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has decided to celebrate Durga Puja on a grand scale for the first time after the BJP formed the government, with preparations under way to build a large pandal and invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah.
Separately, Prime Minister Modi has advised Union ministers to visit different parts of West Bengal frequently, understand people’s needs and act accordingly, the report said.
