A six-storey building collapsed in the Satya Niketan area of south Delhi, leaving at least four people dead, officials said. Rescue teams have so far pulled nine people out of the debris, while two injured persons are undergoing treatment in hospital in critical condition.
With fears that around 50 people may still be trapped, rescue operations are continuing at the site. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the spot to review the ongoing efforts.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah sought details of the rescue work from the Chief Minister, the Delhi Police Commissioner and the Director General of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). He also enquired about the condition of students believed to be staying in the building.
In a post on X, Shah said the incident was deeply shocking and that local authorities and the NDRF were carrying out rescue operations. He added that all necessary medical assistance was being provided to the injured.
BJP MLA Anil Sharma, who visited the area, said the collapse was tragic and that students from different places were living there for studies. He said the exact number of students trapped was not yet known, and that some had called for help while stuck under the rubble.
