The Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology has intensified efforts to bring out the antiquity of Poombuhar, a historic Tamil port town believed to have submerged into the sea over time.
With support from the Indian Maritime University, the department carried out a two-phase excavation programme in March 2025 and again in March 2026, focusing on underwater exploration off the Poombuhar coast.
Officials said the work documented remains of structures associated with the ancient settlement, including building features, a surrounding wall and road-like alignments beneath the sea.
The findings are expected to aid further study of early Tamil civilisation linked to Poombuhar and strengthen ongoing research into the region’s maritime past.
