The TVK government in Tamil Nadu is reportedly considering dissolving municipal corporations ahead of schedule and appointing special officers to run them.
According to the report, despite being in power at the state level, TVK has no councillors in corporations, municipalities and town panchayats, where DMK-backed representatives continue to hold influence. TVK believes this local-level strength is also shaping the political narrative, including in the Assembly.
With the current term said to run until March, the government is expected to target only municipal corporations for early dissolution as a political counter to the DMK. An announcement could come after the ongoing Assembly session concludes.
The plan, as described, is to bring corporations under the administration of special officers and then conduct local body elections within six months. TVK leaders say their next goal is to win the local body polls, highlighting alleged corruption in municipal administration and focusing on complaints related to irregularities in municipal department tenders.
Senior ministers have reportedly taken the proposal to Chief Minister Vijay, with a final decision expected from him.
