Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has drawn public attention for a sweeping crackdown on food adulteration and hygiene violations across the state.
Since taking charge on May 25, Mundhe’s first 100 days saw enforcement teams conduct raids at 904 locations. Officials said the drive resulted in the seizure and destruction of spoiled and adulterated food items valued at Rs 34.7 crore.
The seized materials reportedly included fake paneer, adulterated milk, unhygienic cooking oil and hazardous artificial colours. As part of the action, 322 food establishments were sealed for non-compliance, and 457 people were arrested.
The inspections covered a wide range of premises, with action taken against both small and large outlets, including well-known brands. Checks were also carried out in places such as government offices and court premises, with officials stressing that enforcement was carried out without bias.
The stated focus of the campaign has been to ensure safe, hygienic and nutritious food rather than just taste. Mundhe also issued new directions to prevent substandard food from being served during large public events and mass meal distributions, earning praise for a firm approach despite reported political and administrative pressures.
