A special POCSO court in Tirunelveli on Monday delivered its verdict in a case involving the gang rape of a 16-year-old school student from the district.

According to the prosecution, the girl, who was studying Plus Two, was allegedly lured with promises and taken away, after which the accused—identified as Chinnakutti, Muneeswaran and Murugesan—committed sexual assault.

Police registered a case and arrested all three. The investigation included recording the minor’s statement and conducting medical examinations, following which the matter proceeded before the Tirunelveli POCSO special court.

During trial, the government side produced evidence and witness testimonies in support of the charges. After hearing the case, Judge Sureshkumar sentenced Chinnakutti to death, Muneeswaran to 13 years’ imprisonment and Murugesan to 20 years’ imprisonment.

The judgment thus imposed capital punishment on one accused and long-term jail sentences on the other two in the case.
