Nominations opened on Wednesday for the by-elections to the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu. The Election Commission of India has scheduled polling for October 6.
The bypolls follow a series of resignations that left seven Assembly seats vacant. Six AIADMK MLAs who won in the recent Assembly election resigned later and joined TVK, while Chief Minister Vijay—who had won from two constituencies—vacated the Tiruchirappalli East seat.
With election-related cases concerning the remaining constituencies still under court consideration, the Commission announced that voting will be held only in Madurantakam and Dharapuram at this stage.
The last date to file nominations is September 17, and candidates can withdraw their papers until September 19. Counting of votes is set for October 9, and election officials have stepped up monitoring in both constituencies since the poll schedule was announced.
DMK has also announced its candidates for the two seats. The party has again allotted a ticket to Paranthaman, who had won as the DMK MLA from Egmore in 2021 but was not given a chance during the recent general Assembly election.
