Tamil Nadu government has filed a curative petition in the Supreme Court challenging the acquittal of Daswanth in the 2017 Porur case involving a six-year-old girl. The petition is described as the state’s final legal option and is expected to come up for hearing soon.
According to the case details, Daswanth, who lived in the neighbourhood, was arrested on allegations of sexually assaulting the child and later burning her to death near Porur in Chennai.
During the course of proceedings, the Madras High Court granted him bail. After his release from prison, he allegedly killed his mother and went absconding, before being traced and arrested after multiple rounds of search.
In 2018, the Chengalpattu Mahila Court awarded him the death penalty in the girl’s case. However, in 2025, the Supreme Court set aside the conviction and acquitted him, citing lack of sufficient evidence in the sexual assault charge.
A review petition filed by the Tamil Nadu government was dismissed by the Supreme Court in November last year. The state has now approached the court again with a curative petition, seeking reconsideration of the acquittal.
