Court reiterates protection for students
The Supreme Court on Tuesday reiterated that no legal or criminal action should be initiated against students who participated in the Jantar Mantar protest in Delhi. The bench said its earlier directions on the issue were clear and must be followed.
Notice to Gautam Buddha University student flagged
Senior advocate Biswajit Bhattacharya informed the court that the Greater Noida administration had issued a notice to Akshat Tripathi, a Gautam Buddha University student and a state committee member of the All India Students’ Association, for taking part in the protest.
Background: NEET paper leak protest and FIRs
The protest, held in July, demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET question paper leak. The agitation spread across the country and, in several places, turned violent, leading to FIRs being registered at multiple police stations against participating students.
Court to seek explanation from officials
The Supreme Court had earlier ordered that cases registered against students and those without a criminal background be quashed. Despite this, the notice was issued, and the court said it would seek an explanation from Greater Noida officials.
Withdrawal claim questioned
Counsel also submitted that while it was stated the September 4 notice had been withdrawn, no official order confirming the withdrawal was issued, and the information appeared only in media reports.
