Bengaluru: The Election Commission has denied reports that Bharat Ratna awardee and noted scientist Prof. C.N.R. Rao was served a notice during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bengaluru.
The reports had suggested that Rao, 92, a Bengaluru resident and a prominent contributor to science, was flagged in the Malleswaram Assembly constituency due to an alleged discrepancy in the spelling of his name.
Karnataka has completed the SIR exercise, and a draft voter list was released on August 23. As per the draft, around one crore voters were removed for various reasons.
Election officials said Rao’s name appeared differently across lists—recorded as “Rama” in the 2002 roll and later as “Prof. C.N. Rao M.” While a mismatch was noted, the booth-level officer has recommended including his name in the final voter list considering his status as a respected individual.
