New Delhi is weighing the possibility of a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, sources indicated.

The BRICS summit—bringing together Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa—will be held at Bharat Mandapam in Delhi on September 12 and 13, with India chairing the grouping for the fourth time.

China has confirmed President Xi’s visit to India for the summit, with Beijing saying he is travelling at Prime Minister Modi’s invitation. Several leaders and representatives are expected to attend, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto, and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

If the Modi–Xi meeting takes place, discussions are expected to focus on bilateral relations, peace and stability along the border, and issues such as trade and investment.

India has repeatedly underlined that maintaining calm and stability on the border is essential for improving ties, and that both sides have been in talks aimed at restoring relations to normalcy.
