Washington: US President Donald Trump said he believes the war involving Iran will come to an immediate end after the upcoming US election.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said he had a “very good” conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, claiming Putin wants an agreement and that it would be positive if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also agrees. He added that delays are being driven by mutual hostility between the two leaders.

Trump also asserted that Iran “cannot hold on any longer” and accused Tehran of actively trying to affect the US election. He claimed the US has disabled nine Iranian ships, saying several were completely destroyed, and stated he would take responsibility for those strikes.

He said more such developments could follow and argued he is pursuing a broader package than a nuclear deal alone. Trump added that a nuclear agreement is “99.9%” certain, and that additional issues not on the table three months ago are now expected to be included in negotiations.

The remarks come ahead of elections scheduled for November, when votes will be held for parliamentary and Senate seats as well as various state and local offices, marking the mid-point of the president’s term.
