Mumbai: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has said a fully digital, barrier-free toll collection system will be implemented across India by March 2027.
Speaking at an event in Mumbai, the minister said the government is moving towards technology-driven tolling, including efforts to link FASTag with a vehicle’s registration number. He described the move as a significant step forward in toll collection.
Gadkari said a system that uses both the vehicle registration number and FASTag could generate around Rs 10,000 crore in annual revenue for the government. He noted that waiting times at toll plazas—once as high as 12 minutes and sometimes up to 30 minutes—reduced after FASTag was introduced.
He added that the goal of the new digital tolling model is to eliminate stops, helping save time and reduce fuel consumption. The minister said 60% to 70% of the work is expected to be completed by the end of this year, with nationwide implementation targeted for February–March next year.
