Tehran said Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) carried out attacks on more than 20 vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, including 10 American ships.
The latest escalation follows a recent incident in which the IRGC fired missiles at a US Navy warship in the same waters. In response, the US military on September 8 reportedly attacked and destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers, according to the report.
Iran said it retaliated the same night by targeting US military bases operating in Jordan’s Babrak and Azraq areas. Reports said eight F-15 fighter jets were damaged, while an A-10 “Warthog” attack aircraft suffered heavy damage, including the loss of a wheel and part of a wing.
The US military said there were no fatalities on its side. Iran also claimed it attacked two US warships and eight oil tankers, and struck 10 additional foreign vessels for allegedly violating restrictions.
Iran further warned that it has expanded its control zone beyond the Strait of Hormuz into the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, and threatened strict action against ships entering without permission. The report said crude oil prices surged in international markets, crossing $100 per barrel.
