Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced that every American citizen would receive $5,000 if the Republican Party wins the upcoming congressional elections scheduled for November 3.
Speaking at a Republican Party conference in Dallas, Trump made the pledge as part of an unusual campaign push for a midterm election, which is typically seen as a public verdict on the president midway through a four-year term.
The report notes that the administration’s policies have coincided with rising prices of essential goods and an economic squeeze. It also cites increased fuel costs linked to a war with Iran as a factor that has added to public anger.
Trump added a condition to the proposed payout, saying the money should not be spent abroad and must be used only within the United States. Opposition parties criticised the announcement, alleging it resembled a bargain with voters and amounted to an attempt to lure the public during election season.
The report also recalls that Trump had earlier spoken of giving $2,000 per person from tax revenues collected from abroad, but that proposal did not move beyond an announcement.
