The Election Commission of India has granted state party status to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Chief Minister Vijay, and has also recognised the party’s “whistle” as its official symbol.

TVK contested the Tamil Nadu Assembly election for the first time in April and won 108 constituencies. The party secured 1.72 crore votes, accounting for 34.2% of the total vote share, and formed the government after pushing DMK and AIADMK behind.

In an official update published on its website, the Election Commission said TVK has been accorded recognition as a state party, with the whistle symbol made permanent for the party.

Reacting to the announcement, Vijay said that within 27 months of entering politics, people delivered what he described as an unprecedented mandate in the state’s political history by elevating TVK as a major force.

He added that the Commission has recognised TVK as a political party in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and said the whistle symbol—credited by him with enabling a “silent democratic revolution”—has now been formally approved. He reiterated the party’s commitment to secularism and social justice.
