The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced former IAS officer Debashish Sharma as its candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election in Assam. The bypoll is scheduled for October 6.

The vacancy arose after Pradyut Bordoloi, who won the Nagaon seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha election on a Congress ticket, later joined the BJP. He subsequently contested and won the Dispur Assembly seat in April and resigned from his MP post.

Sharma had been serving as the Nagaon district collector and took voluntary retirement on September 3. He joined the BJP on September 8 and was named the party’s candidate within a few days.

According to details shared, Sharma is a 1992-batch IAS officer of the Assam cadre. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in public relations.

He has also served as a special officer to former Assam Governor S.K. Sinha and worked as the resident commissioner of Assam Bhavan in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
