Beijing said India and China should address their differences in an amicable manner and approach bilateral ties with a long-term perspective, as Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to arrive in Delhi to attend the BRICS summit.

The BRICS leaders’ summit will be held in Delhi on Friday, with heads of state and government from Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa among those participating. Xi’s visit comes after a gap of seven years, and he is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the summit.

The proposed Modi–Xi meeting is being seen as significant for India–China relations. The two leaders last met in person during the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, in October last year, and again this year in Tianjin, China.

Commenting on the upcoming talks, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said China would act in line with the diplomatic guidance provided by the two leaders. She said both sides should strengthen communication, enhance cooperation and properly manage differences while maintaining good-neighbourly ties.

Mao added that India and China should work in a way that helps each other succeed, describing this as important for sustaining friendly relations between the two countries.
