As the 9/11 remembrance day approaches, a video highlighting the actions of Indian taxi driver Gurvinder Singh is going viral on social media.
According to the account shared online, New York’s transport system was severely disrupted on the day of the Twin Towers attack, leaving many people unable to return home. Singh is said to have made hundreds of trips without charging passengers, helping those stranded in the city.
The report adds that he continued offering free rides for around 40 days in the aftermath of the attacks.
His efforts were formally acknowledged at the time, with then New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani sending him a letter expressing gratitude and appreciation.
Speaking ahead of the memorial day, Singh was quoted as saying: “Love everyone, respect everyone, and may God bless you.” Social media users have been posting messages praising his gesture.
