Writer Jayamohan on Saturday praised Dinamalar as a source of pride for the people of Kanyakumari district, noting that the newspaper began there and has since expanded across Tamil Nadu as a major institution.
He was speaking at the Dinamalar “Coral Festival” marking the daily’s 75th anniversary, organised jointly by Dinamalar and the SRM University Tamil Chair. The event was held at the Dr T.P. Ganeshan auditorium at SRM University, Kattankulathur, under the chairmanship of university chancellor Parivendhar.
Delivering a talk titled “What can a newspaper achieve, and what has Dinamalar achieved?”, Jayamohan said he rarely participates in large public events and usually speaks only at a few forums each year, mostly in small literary gatherings.
Reflecting on today’s media habits, he said many people now consume news through platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook. In such a climate, he said, newspapers like Dinamalar continue to struggle while also carrying responsibility for what they publish, with clear roles for reporters and editors.
Jayamohan said Dinamalar demonstrated that a daily is not just about major headlines but a collection of hundreds and thousands of reports, where even small developments matter. He described the paper’s 75-year continuity and its ability to accommodate diverse content as a key strength for facing the future.
