A 54-year-old woman in Greece has delivered a healthy baby girl after an embryo that had been kept frozen for 22 years was implanted, drawing attention for the rarity of such a long-preserved IVF pregnancy.
According to reports, the woman had undergone IVF years ago and had several embryos stored in a laboratory under frozen conditions. Her only son, who was born later, recently died in a road accident.
Struggling with the loss, she decided to proceed with implantation of one of the embryos preserved at the hospital more than two decades ago, hoping to have another child.
Doctors monitored her closely and, with the support of modern medical technology, the delivery was completed successfully. The case is being viewed as an uncommon achievement in reproductive medicine due to the 22-year storage period.
The mother said the newborn daughter has brought light back into her life, describing the child as a sibling to her late son.
