Hindu Munnani has demanded that authorities withdraw an order that it says restricts women and children from taking part in Vinayagar Chaturthi immersion processions.

In a statement issued from Tiruppur, state president Kadeswara Subramaniam said the direction was conveyed during a Vinayagar Chaturthi coordination meeting held in Aruppukottai, Virudhunagar district, under the chairmanship of the RDO. He alleged that participants were told women and children should not join the procession and that carrying “mulaippari” should not be allowed.

The organisation said such restrictions amount to interference with Hindus’ religious worship rights. It also objected to conditions related to drum and percussion performances near a mosque and what it described as limits on the right to use public roads.

Hindu Munnani urged the Aruppukottai RDO to revoke the order immediately, warning that otherwise it may be forced to postpone the immersion procession organised by the group. The statement also appealed for officials to be guided to ensure the festival is conducted smoothly.
