Prime Minister Narendra Modi briefly paused his opening remarks at the BRICS summit after China’s President Xi Jinping appeared uncomfortable while seated.

The BRICS conference—bringing together members including India, China, Russia, Brazil and South Africa—began on September 12 and concluded on September 13. Leaders such as Xi Jinping, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian attended.

During the inaugural session at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Modi noticed Xi’s apparent discomfort and stopped speaking to ask if he was alright. Xi did not respond immediately.

Modi then sought clarification through Xi’s interpreter. After Xi nodded to indicate there was no issue, Modi continued with his address. No reason for Xi’s brief discomfort was reported.
