New Delhi: Following the collapse of a student hostel building in Delhi that left seven people dead, civic authorities have launched a crackdown on unauthorised constructions across the city.
The incident occurred in the Satya Niketan area, where a five-storey, around 50-year-old building functioning as a students’ hostel suddenly collapsed on September 6. An inquiry later found multiple violations in the construction.
In connection with the case, the building owner Hariram Gupta and others were arrested, officials said.
Subsequently, inspections were carried out citywide to identify buildings constructed without permission. During checks conducted on September 11 and 12, authorities found 67 structures to be illegal.
The Delhi municipal corporation demolished the identified buildings using heavy machinery, and sealed nine other buildings. Demolitions were reported in larger numbers in areas including Najafgarh and North Shahdara.
