Several DMK functionaries, including MPs, former ministers and MLAs, have come under scrutiny after making sharp personal remarks about Chief Minister Vijay, despite party president M.K. Stalin’s instruction to maintain decorum.
The controversy follows Vijay’s speech in the Assembly on September 7, where he referred to past corruption allegations against the DMK, including mentions of the Sarkaria Commission report and Enforcement Directorate allegations. His comments about Stalin’s detention under the MISA law also triggered a political row.
After Stalin released a video on the issue, Vijay clarified that he had no intention of insulting anyone. Even so, the DMK held a protest on Saturday condemning Vijay’s remarks, with Stalin reportedly advising participants not to target individuals personally.
At the protest, DMK MP Raja, former minister Sekar Babu, and MLAs including Vasantham Karthikeyan and Markandeyan allegedly went beyond that guidance and criticised Vijay strongly. Raja’s remarks were also described as derogatory towards minister Nirmal Kumar.
In response, Nirmal Kumar issued a statement criticising Raja, while DMK MP Kanimozhi cited a Thirukkural line to indirectly disapprove of the speech. Leaders from the CPI(M), BJP, Naam Tamilar Katchi, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the Congress also condemned Raja’s comments. Raja later released a statement expressing regret and said he was willing to withdraw his words.
