A past episode from former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s 2005 visit to Iceland has drawn fresh attention amid discussions about menus served to leaders at international events.
Iceland is widely known for fish and seafood, and official banquets at the presidential residence traditionally highlight non-vegetarian dishes. However, Kalam, known for his strict vegetarian habits, was hosted with special arrangements.
During the state visit in May 2005, Icelandic President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson hosted a grand official dinner in Kalam’s honour. For the occasion, the hosts prepared a dedicated vegetarian spread.
According to the account, the menu was planned with Indian cooking styles in mind, featuring vegetables and lentil-based dishes. Indian embassy officials had coordinated in advance with Iceland’s protocol team to ensure Kalam’s preferred food was available without difficulty.
The incident is being cited as an example of how high-level diplomatic events can accommodate guests’ cultural practices and dietary choices.
