Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday cautioned that wars in some countries are increasingly affecting the everyday lives of ordinary people across the world. Speaking at the closing session of the two-day BRICS summit in Delhi, he said rising conflicts and tensions are creating wider economic and social strain.
Modi also warned against the “weaponisation” of technology and rare minerals, saying such moves can undermine global development and prosperity. He stressed that the benefits of new technologies should be made accessible to all countries.
The summit, which brought together 11 countries representing about 49% of the world’s population and around 40% of global GDP, focused on areas including logistics and supply chains, start-ups, and pandemic control. Modi said recent experiences—from pandemics and seasonal disasters to supply disruptions—have highlighted how interdependent nations have become.
He said BRICS members must strengthen their ability to anticipate challenges, stay prepared, and respond quickly when needed. As part of this, the grouping agreed to work on an integrated early-warning system to detect and prevent infectious diseases, and prepared guidelines to improve disaster response and rapid information-sharing.
Calling for unity amid diversity, Modi said BRICS cooperation should extend beyond governments to include entrepreneurs, farmers, researchers, women and youth. He also underlined India’s tradition of respecting nature, adding that development and environmental protection are not opposing goals and must be balanced for sustainable growth.
