A petition has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking a bar on MLAs who resigned from their posts from contesting the ensuing by-elections.

The plea, filed by advocate S. Kasi Ramalingam, refers to six AIADMK legislators who won in the Tamil Nadu Assembly election and later resigned: Madurantakam MLA Maragatham Kumaravel, Dharapuram MLA Sathyabama, Ambasamudram MLA Isakki Subbiah, Perundurai MLA Jayakumar, Karur MLA M.R. Vijayabaskar and Viralimalai MLA C. Vijayabaskar.

According to the petitioner, the resignations were made for personal gain and positions, and were contrary to the mandate given by voters.

The petition further claims that the resignations have created an unnecessary burden on governments and the Election Commission and led to wastage of public money. It seeks directions to disallow them from contesting the bypolls and to recover the by-election expenses from them.
