A gold mine collapse in Sudan has left at least 60 workers dead, triggering grief and concern over safety at informal mining sites.
The incident occurred at the Al-Sara gold mine near the town of El-Nuhud in West Kordofan. The mine reportedly caved in on Tuesday, trapping workers under rubble.
Through the night, fellow miners attempted rescue efforts using the tools they had on hand. Survivors said heavy machinery is needed to remove rocks and soil, while several people are still unaccounted for.
Reports suggest the close spacing of mines in the area may have contributed to successive cave-ins. The ongoing civil war and economic strain since 2023 are also said to be pushing more people into mining due to lack of alternatives.
