Chennai Police’s Central Crime Branch (CB-CID) has registered a case under anti-corruption provisions against DMK former minister Anbil Mahesh, following allegations that bribes were taken to secure approvals for private schools.

Based on the complaint, the CB-CID conducted surprise searches at several locations linked to Mahesh in Chennai and Tiruchy, including his residence and offices. Police said they seized key documents and digital material during the raids.

The case stems from a petition filed at the Chennai Police Commissioner’s office by a complainant named Ilangovan, alleging irregularities in obtaining permanent recognition and construction-related permissions for private schools. During the probe, police registered cases against private school association office-bearers including its president Arasakumar, alleging collections exceeding Rs 100 crore from school managements.

Arasakumar was arrested and detained under the Goondas Act, and former MLA Muthukumaar and two others were also arrested. Police said more than 250 people have been questioned so far, 177 affected private schools have been identified, and bank accounts linked to the accused, their family members and associates have been frozen, with transaction verification continuing for multiple accounts.

Citing witness statements, documents, electronic evidence and government records, investigators said allegations were raised against Mahesh, who was the School Education Minister at the time. The CB-CID has issued a summons asking him to appear at its Chennai office on the following day.
