The Maha Kumbhabhishekam of the Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple was held in a grand manner on Thursday, September 17, 2026, between 7.40 am and 8.10 am. The ceremony is performed by sanctifying the temple’s kalasams (finials) and the main deities with holy water, symbolically re-establishing divine energy in the shrine.

The report notes that the temple’s Kumbhabhishekam in the last century took place in 1923, 1963, 1974, 1995 and 2009, with the latest event held after a gap of 17 years. It recalls that the 1963 consecration was conducted in June during Kamarajar’s tenure, in the presence of the Kanchi Mahaperiyava.

On renovation works, the 2009 Kumbhabhishekam saw repairs worth Rs 14 crore supported by 320 donors, and devotees’ offerings were used to make a gold covering for the Amman sannidhi gopuram using 30 kg of gold, valued then at about Rs 4 crore. For the current round, the report says temple funds of Rs 15.81 crore were used for renovation, while Rs 21 crore was received from donors for renovation and yagasalai rituals.

As part of the consecration preparations, 14 gopuram kalasams—including two gold gopurams—were filled with nine varieties of grains such as varagu, paddy and kambu, totalling about 7 tonnes. The report also highlights key architectural facts, including that the temple evolved through expansions over different periods, has 12 gopurams (14 including the gold towers), and that the eastern gopuram facing the Swami sannidhi is the oldest, while the southern outer gopuram is the tallest.
