Chennai: Minister Ramesh on Tuesday accused certain groups of attempting to “do politics using temples”, saying they oppose even positive steps taken in temples.

Speaking to reporters in Chennai, he said there was “no issue” over Karthigai Deepam and described it as a festival celebration that would be observed joyfully with the public as usual. On the Tirupparankundram Deepam-related case, he said the government would wait for the Supreme Court’s verdict.

On the restriction on mobile phone use inside temples, the minister said the policy had not failed and alleged that some were trying to turn the matter into a political issue. He added that temples had already been advised to make alternative arrangements if devotees faced inconvenience or hardship.

Ramesh said the government’s role was to do what people need and claimed the administration was delivering on that. He also said the party would work hard to win the upcoming by-election, and praised Chief Minister Vijay’s governance, stating that Tamil Nadu was doing well and people were happy.

Responding to criticism about electoral prospects, he said Chief Minister Vijay respects all religions and all gods, and cannot be confined to any single identity, describing him as a leader for everyone.
