Tata Sons has approved a five-year extension for chairman N. Chandrasekaran, following a board meeting held in Mumbai on September 17. The decision comes even as Chandrasekaran had recently indicated he did not wish to continue beyond the end of his current term.

Chandrasekaran, 63, has spent about four decades with the Tata group and has served as chairman for 10 years. His existing tenure is set to end on February 20, 2027, and Tata Sons had begun the process of looking for a successor after his earlier communication.

In a statement, Tata Sons said the board requested Chandrasekaran to reconsider his decision, which he accepted. The company said the board then passed a resolution by majority vote to reappoint him as chairman for another five years.

The same board meeting also approved a proposal to list Tata Sons on the stock market, according to the report.

However, Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata opposed Chandrasekaran’s reappointment at the board meeting. Tata Trusts later said Noel Tata’s dissenting vote was declared invalid “without any basis,” and reiterated that Chandrasekaran’s earlier decision not to continue after February 2027—and its acceptance—was final. Tata Trusts holds 66% of Tata Sons, the report noted.
