Washington: US President Donald Trump has issued a new list of countries linked to illegal drug production and trafficking. India, along with Pakistan and China, is among the 23 nations named in the document.

In an official statement, Trump said he welcomed the “constructive steps” taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government to prevent illegal opium cultivation, disrupt sellers, and strengthen security measures.

He added that the United States looks forward to continuing cooperation with India through the “India–US Counternarcotics Policy Framework.”

The list also includes countries such as Afghanistan, the Bahamas, Belize, Bolivia, Myanmar, Colombia and Mexico. The US clarified that inclusion in the list does not automatically mean a government is not taking action against drugs.

However, the US identified Afghanistan, Bolivia, Myanmar and Colombia as countries that have “failed demonstrably” to adhere to international counternarcotics agreements.
