The Election Commission has allotted a new party name and symbol to the faction led by Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal. The group has been directed to use the name Mamata All India Trinamool Congress, with the football player symbol.
The development follows a split in the Trinamool Congress after the West Bengal Assembly elections. One faction is led by Mamata Banerjee, while another is led by Arup Roy.
Amid the dispute, the Commission had frozen the party’s name and its symbol (twin flowers) and asked both sides to choose new names and symbols until the issue is resolved.
Now, the Commission has allotted separate identities to both groups. Arup Roy’s faction has been assigned the name Democratic Trinamool Congress and the postal envelope symbol.
The Commission has also recognised both factions as political parties and instructed them to contest the upcoming by-elections in the state using their newly allotted names and symbols.
